Accessibility on the Water: How Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours is Making the Soo Locks Experience Inclusive for Everyone
For more than 67 years, Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours has been committed to providing an unforgettable experience for every guest who steps aboard. As the only locally owned and family-operated Soo Locks boat tour company continually operating since 1959, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience one of Michigan’s most remarkable engineering wonders—regardless of physical ability.
Accessibility isn’t simply something we offer—it’s part of who we are.
Bringing the Upper Deck Experience to Every Guest
One of the most popular places aboard our vessels is the upper observation deck, where guests enjoy panoramic views of the Soo Locks, passing freighters, the St. Marys River, and the

surrounding waterfront.
Unfortunately, not every passenger can comfortably access the upper deck due to mobility limitations, wheelchair use, or other physical challenges.
That’s why Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours recently invested in a state-of-the-art closed-circuit camera system designed specifically with accessibility in mind.
A high-definition camera mounted in our pilot house provides live forward-facing video that is displayed on monitors throughout the lower deck. Guests who remain on the accessible lower level can now enjoy nearly the same breathtaking perspective as those standing on the upper deck, watching ships approach, entering the locks, and viewing the river ahead in real time.
This technology helps ensure that every passenger shares in the excitement of the journey, regardless of where they are seated.
Live American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation Available
Our commitment to inclusion extends beyond physical accessibility.
Guests who are deaf or hard of hearing may request live American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for our narrated tours. When requested in advance, a qualified ASL interpreter accompanies our guests throughout the cruise, translating our engaging narration so they receive the same educational and entertaining experience enjoyed by every passenger onboard.
From fascinating maritime history and engineering facts to stories about the ships that travel the Great Lakes, we believe everyone deserves full access to the incredible story of the Soo Locks.
